ITE books

Finnish contemporary folk art, aka ITE art, has delighted audiences for over a decade. Works of sculptors and other skilful backyard artists have been exhibited not only in Finland but also in numerous other European countries, and several books have been written about them. The books are in Finnish. More infomation on this page.

ITE Art in Finland
Edited by professor emeritus Seppo Knuuttila
Maahenki, 2011

This book is the first publication in English to introduce ITE art to wider audiences. In their articles, art experts, including Archiatre Risto Pelkonen as well as the ITE artist Alpo Koivuniemi, discuss the essence of ITE art: the creativity and inventiveness of ordinary people. Twenty-four very different self-taught artists are presented in both words and photos.

The book is sold out, but there can be found some copies to enthusiasts in the Association for Rural Culture and Education. You can contact maaseudunsivistysliitto@msl.fi and ask.
